/ Macek /
The surname Macek has Slavic origins, primarily from Slovak, Czech, and Polish regions. It is derived from the diminutive of "Matej" or "Matěj," the equivalent of "Matthew" in English, meaning "gift of God." In Czech, Slovak, and Polish, the name resembles "cat" (mačka) or "teddy bear" (macko). In Slovenian and Croatian, "maček" means "tom cat," likely a nickname for a cautious or skillful person.

Food
Food is more than just a source of sustenance; it's a form of expression and a way to bring people together. I am blessed with many great memories revolving around Slovakian cuisine. From my mom picking me up from the airport, potato pancakes in hand, to watching my babysitter, Teta Anna, creating pierogi's from scratch, to our family + cultural gatherings, there is always food, conversation and memories to be made. Some Slovak favorites: bryndzové halušky, zemiakové placky, guláš, kapustnica.
Culture
Slovak culture is full of wonder and beauty. From delicious traditional dishes to lively music and dance, there is so much to explore and appreciate. I am first generation American but my passion for my culture and appreciation of my roots runs deep. Join me on my journey to celebrate the beauty and vibrancy of the Slovak culture.

Music
Growing up in a Slovakian household, I didn't fully understand the influence traditional music would have on my life. I was the youngest member of the Tatra Slovak Folk Group who sought to preserve Slovak culture through song, costume, and dance. I learned ľudové pesničky (traditional folk songs) and how to dance with a valaška. (shepherd's axe) My mom would sew our kroje. (folk costumes)
I learned to play the accordion from my father at age 3, harmonize from my mom and quickly became immersed into a different music scene picking up instruments that my parents asked me to play. At a young age I was singing, harmonizing, playing the accordion, keyboard, recorder, harmonica and trumpet. These experiences shaped me and the music I write. I have a deep appreciate for the traditions and am forever grateful.
